The Appleton offers a variety of opportunities for adults to learn something new and practice or fine-tune existing skills. Courses and workshops range from one day to multi-week sessions with local artists, art instructors and special visiting artists. Art 101

Pottery

These six-week sessions offer potters of all skill levels a chance to practice and develop new skills and techniques in hand building and wheel throwing through fun and functional ceramic projects such as serving sets, vases, or your own creative expressions. Fee includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, firing, and extra studio time from 1-4 p.m. on select Saturdays.

Open Studio Clay

Open studio time is available to ages 16 and older who have previously completed one six-week Dig into Clay session.

Option 1: Your choice of six Saturday afternoons (September 8-December 29 or February 2-April 27), 1-4 p.m. Includes access to a variety of glazes and firing of all work completed during the studio session. 25 lb. bags of clay can be purchased for $30.

Option 2: Pay-as-you-go each Saturday, (September 8-December 29 or February 2-April 27), 1-4 p.m.

Clay Workshops

Clay Gingerbread House: Tuesdays, October 9, 11, and 23, 9 a.m.-noon
In this three-part workshop with Mary Moore, hand build a whimsical gingerbread house for the holidays. All materials are included.

Surface Design for Clay: Saturdays, November 10, 1-4 p.m. or February 16, 1-4 p.m., 1-4 p.m.
In these on-day workshops with Cheyenne Chapman Rudolph, create a range of imagery, patterns and surfaces using slips and underglazes on tiles. Techniques include sgraffito, mishima, stenciling, stamping, slip trailing, water etching and image transfer; all are applicable for wheel-thrown or hand-built wares. Fee includes all materials and firing, though you may bring your own stamps, stencils or clay tools for carving. This workshop is offered in the fall and spring with unique curriculums.

Watercolor Workshop

Learn from the masters in this new series of classes, designed for those who are ready to take their work to the next level.

Watercolor with Sue Primeau
Thursdays, February 21, March 7, March 14 and March 28, 6-8 p.m.

Whether a beginner, intermediate or advanced, it’s time to have fun painting with watercolor. In this four-week class, learn at your own pace with plenty of hands-on painting time in class and one-on-one instructor assistance with informative critiques. Materials not included; a supply list will be provided upon registration.

Bookmaking Workshop

Learn from the masters in this new series of classes, designed for those who are ready to take their work to the next level.

Printmaking and Bookmaking with Tyrus Clutter
Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23, 1-5 p.m.

On the first day make relief prints, and on the second, combine your artwork into a one-of-a-kind handmade book. All materials are included.

Still-Life Painting with Pedro Brull
Thursday, October 11, 1-4 p.m.
Examine how light affects objects to then create their own depiction, using fragments of color while still maintaining the integrity of the object in a surreal-abstract acrylic painting. All materials are included.

Small Mobile Sculpture with Carmen Rojas
